How to choose a personalized book: what to check first
03/11/2026
Name, pronouns, your child's likeness, what you see before paying and what you can fix. How to spot a good custom book before you buy it.

Choose a personalized book by how much of your child is really in it: just their name, a character assembled from a menu, or their actual likeness. Then check three practical things: what you get to see before you pay, what you can fix once the book is finished, and what you pay in total, including printing and shipping. A seller who won't answer that up front won't tell you after you order either.
If you want a gift your child recognizes at first glance, a book illustrated from a photo is worth it. If what matters most is a beautifully written story and the name is just a bonus, a classic book by a great author with a handwritten dedication will serve you better. And if you only have a few hours before the gift is due, skip the printed custom book entirely and go for the digital version or a gift card.
Three kinds of custom books: name, avatar, or likeness
Three very different things are sold under the word personalized. The simplest is a ready-made story with the name dropped in. The illustrations are the same for every child and the hero is a generic character.
One step further are avatar books. You pick hair color, skin tone, hairstyle or glasses, and the character moves a little closer to your child. But it's still a type, not a specific child.
The third kind starts with a photo. The hero has that particular child's features, so even grandparents recognize them the moment they open the book, no explanation needed. This is the most personal route, but it needs a good photo and a bit more time to prepare.
None of these is a scam or a mistake. The point is to know which one you're buying, because in ads the pictures look similar for all three.
What to check before you order
- How the name and pronouns are handledTemplate books often drop the name into fixed slots, so you end up with clumsy lines like “James' adventure” next to “James's dog”, or the wrong pronoun for your child. Look at the text sample to see whether the name and pronouns read naturally in every sentence. When the story is written for your child from the start, they fit everywhere.
- What you see before you payAsk exactly what you'll get to preview. With us, it's a suggested title, a story sample and the dedication. The finished illustrations are created only after payment, because they're made for each child individually. Anyone who promises more should show you what it looks like.
- What you can fix once it's finishedA good custom book can be fine-tuned. Check whether you can edit the text and whether an illustration that didn't work out can be redone. With us, you edit the text yourself before printing, and 3 new illustration versions are free, each extra one costs A$0.49.
- What you pay in totalCompare the final price, not the first number on the page. With us, the digital book costs A$11.99, the printed one A$54.99 and shipping A$9.99. The audiobook is optional for A$4.99. You'll find the breakdown in our article how much a custom book costs.
- How soon you'll have itThe digital book is usually ready within 15 minutes. Printing takes up to 7 business days, plus shipping. Our article how long a custom book takes goes into detail. Before Christmas, leave yourself some slack.
- Which languages it comes inFor a bilingual family or a gift for someone abroad, it helps when the book isn't limited to English. With us, you choose from 30 languages.
- What happens to the photoA child's photo is personal data. Look in the privacy policy for what the seller uses it for, where it's stored and how you delete it. With us, the photo is used to create your child's illustrations. How long we keep it and how to delete it is in our privacy policy.
- Whether you can return itIn many countries, consumer law exempts goods made to the customer's specifications from the usual right to return. A book created from your child's photo and name usually falls under that exception. Before you order, read the specific seller's terms. You can always claim a printing defect, though, so check how claims are handled.

How to go about it once you're ordering
- 1Get a good photo readyA sharp photo of the face from the front, in daylight, without sunglasses or a hat over the eyes. Just that one child in the photo. For siblings, prepare a separate photo for each.
- 2Think about what the story should be aboutA child who loves dinosaurs will enjoy a different world than a little gardener. You can pick a ready-made plot or describe your own idea in a few sentences.
- 3Check the text sampleGo through the name, pronouns, how your child is addressed and the dedication. Write the dedication as if you were writing it by hand. For inspiration, see our article book dedications.
- 4Go through the finished book page by pageBefore you order the print, read the whole text and look at every illustration. Fix anything you don't like now. After printing, you can't.
- 5Order the print lastYou can order the printed version of a finished book at any time. Don't rush it before you're happy with the book.
