A made-to-measure book
Amelia: four storybook syllables that shrink to Millie
A name with royal history, an aviator's courage and a cosy nickname built in. Here's why Amelia reads so beautifully on the cover of a personalised picture book — and in the story inside.

Why Amelia makes such a good storybook heroine
Amelia is a name with a lot of room in it. Four syllables — a-MEE-lee-a — rising in the middle and landing softly on an open vowel, which is exactly what makes it read so well aloud. When a parent says it at bedtime it never sounds clipped or hurried; there is time for the story to breathe around it.
That length is a gift on a cover, too. Seven letters set in a big title look deliberate and grand, and a title such as "Amelia and the Map to the Misty Peaks" has the stately rhythm of an old-fashioned adventure novel. The name carries a slightly literary air — it has been the title of a classic English novel and the name of a princess — so it suits stories where the heroine sets out, explores and comes home changed.
Inside the story the name does two jobs. In narration, "Amelia" keeps that storybook dignity: "Amelia looked down at the valley and took a deep breath." In dialogue a friend or a grandparent can switch to "Millie", and suddenly the scene feels warm and close. Few names offer such a clear grown-up form and such a playful short one, and a personalised book is the perfect place to use both.
There is also a practical reason Amelia works so well in a picture book: it is unambiguous. Australian children hear it everywhere, it is spelled the way it sounds, and a young reader sounding out the cover will recognise her own name the moment she sees the capital A.
Where Amelia comes from and why Australia loves it
Amelia most likely grew out of the old Germanic element amal, usually explained as "work" or "industrious" — the same root that gave names to an early medieval royal house, the Amali of the Ostrogoths. The modern spelling took shape later, and over the centuries Amelia has also been read alongside the Roman family name Aemilia, which is why some baby-name books translate it as "rival" or "eager". Either way, the name has a sense of energy and effort baked into it: an Amelia is someone who gets on with things.
In the English-speaking world the name arrived with the Hanoverian royal family in the 18th century. Princess Amelia, the youngest daughter of King George III, made it fashionable at court, and in 1751 Henry Fielding published his novel "Amelia", whose patient, warm-hearted heroine helped fix the name in the popular imagination.
In the 20th century one person above all gave the name its adventurous streak: the aviator Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. Thanks to her, Amelia sounds a little brave — a name for someone who looks at the horizon and wants to go further.
Today Amelia is one of the best-loved girls' names in Australia. Through the 2010s and into the 2020s it has sat near the very top of the birth registrations in most states, regularly trading the leading spots with only a handful of other names. It was also the number one girls' name in England and Wales for several years in a row, so it feels familiar wherever English is spoken. Popularity hasn't worn it out, though; it still sounds gentle rather than trendy, and it ages beautifully from a toddler to a grown woman.
Nicknames and pet names for Amelia
- Millie — The cosy everyday form, and the one many Australian families reach for first. Bright and bouncy, it suits the playground, the dinner table and a best friend shouting across a park.
- Amy — A short, classic alternative that keeps the opening sound of Amelia. Often chosen by children themselves once they start school and want something quick to write.
- Mimi — A baby-talk favourite from the toddler years, frequently used by grandparents and older siblings long after the child has grown out of it.
- Melly — A softer, sing-song pet name built on the middle of the name — affectionate and slightly teasing, mostly used at home.
- Lia — Taken from the end of Amelia; a modern, minimalist nickname that some families prefer because it sounds grown-up and light at the same time.
- Amelia — The full name for the important moments — the school roll, a birthday card, the cover of her very own book, and the slightly stern "Amelia, come here, please" when needed.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is beautiful and my granddaughter is happy with it.
We are satisfied, my little boy really liked the book too. :)
The book and the audiobook are both great. Minor imperfections were willingly and immediately fixed to my satisfaction. I will definitely buy another one, and I have also recommended it to others..
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.

It's up to you — the hero's name is whatever you type in the guide. Many families use the full name Amelia for the cover and story, because it looks so elegant in a title, and keep Millie for the dedication at the front, where it feels personal.
