A made-to-measure book
Evelyn on the cover, Evie at bedtime: a name with two voices
Evelyn is a name that carries a little old-fashioned grace in full and turns playful the moment it's shortened to Evie. A personalised picture book can hold both — the proper name printed on the cover, the nickname tucked into the story where it sounds most like home.

Why a book with Evelyn in the title
Evelyn is three soft syllables — EV-uh-lin — and on a cover it looks longer and more storybook-like than most modern girls' names. Set in large letters above a starfield or a farmyard, it reads like the title of a classic, which is exactly the feeling many parents had in mind when they chose it.
Inside the story, the name does something different. Children called Evelyn are very often Evie to everyone who loves them, and hearing "Evie" in the mouth of a story character feels personal in a way the formal name doesn't. The book can use Evelyn where the narrator is being grand — the brave moment, the last page — and Evie where a friend is calling across the park. That switch between the two is something only an Evelyn gets to enjoy.
There is also a small, satisfying detail in how the name begins: Ev-. Children learning their letters often spot the E first, and a book where that capital E opens the title and keeps reappearing through the pages gives an early reader something to hunt for and recognise as their own.
The sample covers above show how differently the name can play out. Evelyn in a spacesuit with a rocket behind her sounds like an explorer from an old adventure serial; Evelyn on a dawn path with her teddy sounds like the start of a quiet, brave picture book. The same name stretches to fit both, partly because it has no strong modern associations pulling it one way — it can be adventurous, gentle or funny depending on the plot you choose.
Where the name Evelyn comes from
Evelyn reached English as a surname. It traces back to the Norman French given name Aveline, which arrived in England after 1066 and was itself a pet form of an older Germanic name whose exact meaning is uncertain — suggestions include "desired" or "wished-for child". Over the centuries Aveline settled into the family name Evelyn, and from the seventeenth century onward families began using that surname as a first name again.
For a long stretch it was used for boys as well as girls; in Britain a male Evelyn was not unusual well into the twentieth century. Gradually the name drifted to the girls' side, and today it is overwhelmingly a girl's name throughout the English-speaking world.
Many people link Evelyn to the meaning "life" because of the way it opens with Ev-. That connection is popular and pretty, but it comes from the sound rather than the history; the documented line runs through Aveline.
The name's popularity has had two lives. It was well used in the early 1900s, faded mid-century, and then came back strongly with the revival of vintage names. In the United States it has sat in or around the top ten for girls in recent years, and Australian parents have embraced both Evelyn and the short form Evie, which is often given as a name in its own right. There is no name day to list for Evelyn here — the calendar this site uses doesn't include it.
Part of the appeal is how well the name travels between generations. To grandparents it can sound like a great-aunt or a favourite teacher; to children it sounds fresh, because they rarely meet an Evelyn older than themselves. A book with her name on it fits neatly into that: a little bit heirloom, a little bit brand new. And because Evelyn ends in a soft -lyn, it runs smoothly into almost any title — "Evelyn and the…" never trips the tongue when it's read aloud at bedtime.
Nicknames and ways to say Evelyn
- Evie — By far the favourite. Bright and quick, it's the version siblings, grandparents and kinder friends tend to use day to day.
- Evvie — The same sound with a double v — some families prefer this spelling because it can't be misread as "Eye-vee".
- Eve — A shorter, slightly more grown-up option that some Evelyns adopt later on; it keeps the opening of the name and drops the rest.
- Lyn or Lynnie — Built from the end of the name instead of the start. Less common today, but it was a classic nickname for Evelyns of earlier generations.
- Evelyn in full — Kept for the cover, the first day of school, and the moments a story wants to sound important — or when a parent needs to be heard from the other end of the house.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is beautiful and my granddaughter is happy with it.
We are satisfied, my little boy really liked the book too. :)
The book and the audiobook are both great. Minor imperfections were willingly and immediately fixed to my satisfaction. I will definitely buy another one, and I have also recommended it to others..
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.

Yes. You enter the name you want the story to use, so the hero can be Evie throughout, or Evelyn on the cover with Evie in the dialogue — whichever matches what she's actually called at home.
