A made-to-measure book

Samuel means “heard” — so here is a story that listens back

Samuel is an old name with a quiet promise inside it: someone was listening. A personalised picture book turns that around — Samuel becomes the hero, the one whose choices the whole story waits for, with his own name on the cover and Sam in every page of dialogue.

Here's how a book for Samuel could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

Why a book with Samuel on the cover works so well

Samuel is a name that looks good set in large type. Three syllables, a strong opening S and a soft ending give a cover title a natural rhythm — “Samuel and the Compass of Golden Canyon” reads like the spine of a proper adventure novel, not a novelty gift. That matters more than it sounds: children notice when their name sits on a cover with the same weight as the title of a book they already love.

Inside the story, the name does something different. Most boys called Samuel are Sam at home, Sammy to grandparents and Samuel only when they are in trouble or being introduced. A good story uses all of that. The narrator can say Samuel when he steps up to something big, while the other characters call out “Sam!” across a canyon or a cottage garden — the same way people in his real life do. Hearing both versions in one book is part of what makes it feel like his, rather than a story with a name pasted in.

There is also the matter of the meaning. A name that is usually explained as “God has heard” or “heard by God” fits naturally with a story where the hero speaks up, asks for help, or is the one who finally notices the small sound nobody else did. You don’t need to spell that out for a five-year-old, but parents tend to enjoy the quiet echo.

Where the name Samuel comes from

Samuel comes from the Hebrew Shemu’el. The most common reading links it to shama, “to hear”, and El, “God” — hence “God has heard”. Another reading is “name of God”. Both point back to the same story in the First Book of Samuel, where Hannah, who had long prayed for a child, names her son Samuel because her prayer was answered. That boy grew up to be the prophet Samuel, who as a child famously heard a voice calling him in the night and answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” Few names come with a built-in bedtime scene quite so fitting.

From there the name travelled through Greek and Latin (Samouel, Samuel) into almost every European language, and it was taken up enthusiastically in the English-speaking world after the Reformation, when Old Testament names became popular. Over the centuries it collected a long list of well-known bearers — the dictionary-maker Samuel Johnson, the inventor of Morse code Samuel Morse, the writer Samuel Beckett — which is part of why it still sounds both classic and a little bookish.

In Australia, Samuel has been a steady favourite for decades rather than a sudden trend. It sits comfortably among the well-used boys’ names in state birth registers year after year, without ever becoming so dominant that a classroom has four of them. Many parents choose it precisely because it shortens to the easy, friendly Sam while keeping a full, formal version for school certificates and, one day, a wedding invitation.

The spelling has barely moved in English for four hundred years, which is unusual. Other languages kept their own versions: Shmuel in modern Hebrew, Samuele in Italian, Samuël in Dutch, Samu in Hungarian and Finnish. If your family has roots in one of those places, the story can use that form in dialogue — a grandparent calling “Samuele!” from the cottage door is exactly the kind of detail that makes a personalised book feel like it was written for one particular boy.

Sam, Sammy, Sammo — what Samuel gets called

  • Samuel — The full form — for the cover, the dedication page and the moments when the story wants to sound serious or proud.
  • Sam — The everyday short form most boys named Samuel actually answer to. Short, quick to shout across a playground, and ideal for dialogue in a story.
  • Sammy — The little-kid and family version. Grandparents, older siblings and bedtime voices tend to use it; it suits a gentle or funny moment in the book.
  • Sammo — A very Australian twist — the “-o” ending that turns names into mates’ nicknames. More likely from a footy coach or cousin than from Mum, but it shows up.
  • Sami / Samu — Forms you might hear in families with Finnish, Arabic or other heritage, where Samuel has its own long-standing local versions.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction

Popular questions

Yes. You enter the name you want the story to use. Many parents put Samuel on the cover and let the characters call him Sam inside — or simply use Sam throughout if that is the only name he answers to.
